Bernese Mountain Dog

The Bernese Mountain Dog is a big, heavy dog with a particular tricolored coat. The breed was utilized as an all purpose farm dog, for guarding property and for driving cattle. The Bernese calm character makes them a natural for pulling small carts or wagons, a duty they initially carried out in Switzerland. With good guidance they take pleasure in giving children rides inside a cart or collaborating in a parade.

The Bernese coat is slightly coarse in outline, but never harsh in texture. The undercoat is somewhat dense; the coat is quite grime and climate resistant. A decent brushing every week or two is plenty to hold it in excellent shape, except for when the undercoat is being blown; then on a daily basis combing or brushing is in order all through the shed.

Bernese Mountain Dog Temperament

The Bernese Mountain Dogs are outside dogs at heart, while well-behaved in the home; they need activity and working out, but don't have a lot of endurance. They can travel with amazing bursts of speed for their bulk when motivated. The Bernese Mountain Dog character is usually a strong point of this breed. They are affectionate, loyal, devoted , committed, intelligent, but at times shy. The bulk of Bernese are pleasant to people, and other dogs. They regularly get along correctly with other pets similar to cats, horses, etc.

They are surely trainable provided the owner is patient and coherent in training; Bernese want time to think things through. They do not respond well to harsh handling, though Berners are enthusiastic and eager to satisfy their master. Bernese love to be encouraged with praise and goodies. The breed is sweet and safe with children, despite their big size. On the whole, the Bernese Mountain Dog is steady in temperament, tolerant, and loving.
